Critic's Corner:
'Sherlock Holmes'
Angela Thomas
Issue date: 1/25/10 Section: Entertainment
The movie, "Sherlock Holmes," based off of the popular short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was released in theaters Christmas Day.
According to the popular film data site, IMDB.com, the action-packed movie brought in over $62 million in the United States opening weekend.
The movie is filled with an all-star cast, including Jude Law as Dr. John Watson (Sherlock Holmes' closest friend), Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler (Sherlock Holmes' love interest) and Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes.
The film was directed by Guy Ritchie, who also directed 1998's "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels."
Though many fans of the gifted and charismatic title detective were not impressed, the film and actors did not fool Hollywood's good eye.
Robert Downey Jr. won "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy" at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony this year.
The film was also nominated for "Best Score" at the British Film Critics Association Awards and "Excellence in Production Design" at the Art Directors Guild.
The cast did an impeccable job creating a thrill for the audience. Mark Strong, who played the devilishly scary Lord Blackburn, did a wonderful job creating the dark and sinister character that makes up Lord Blackburn.
Rachel McAdams charmed the audience as the beautiful and witty Irene Adler, keeping the story fresh as the leading lady.
Robert Downey Jr. was charming and whimsical as Sherlock Holmes, taking the audience on an adventure through capturing criminals and saving lives.
"Sherlock Holmes" is a visually appealing movie, with a handsome cast, visual scenery and costumes. But without the fast-paced and Victorian soundtrack, the heart-jumping pace of the movie would have ceased to exist.
"Sherlock Holmes" is recommended for anyone who enjoys a story full of many twists and turns, a love for set design and elaborate costumes, and good acting.
