After a series of malfunctions with the emergency phones on campus, a committee will be in place in order to evaluate the system's current conditions. Chief of Police Michael Bicking, director of Public Safety at WCU, said the pressing problem regarding the efficiency of the system does not concern the equipment itself, but the failure of dial tones from the phones.
A petition has been started in hopes of convincing SEPTA to restore rail service to the West Chester area, a means of transportation that could change student commutes to campus and into Philadelphia. Service was discontinued in 1986, a tough period for SEPTA economically, when rail maintenance was impossible to upkeep.
The WCU recycling system has undergone the second change in many years to alleviate contamination in academic and residential buildings. The new plan is to remove large blue dumpsters that commingle recyclables and replace them with the large containers inside buildings that are sent to compactors at recycling centers.
This month America celebrates President's Day, including the birthday of one the most well known America Presidents, Abraham Lincoln. To honor Lincoln, the Lincoln Highway National Museum and Archives is calling on world leaders to write letters and essays on "What Abraham Lincoln Means to Me.
Thanks to the generous donation of nearly $1 million from the retired English Professor Ammon G. Kershner and his wife Loretta; the fundraising campaign for the renovation of the former Swope Hall has now met their goal. The former Swope Hall will be renovated in the next few years to become a Student Services Center.
In fall of 1999 the students of West Chester University decided that they wanted to dedicate the Sykes third floor study lounge to Frederick Douglass, and eight years later the goal is finally becoming a reality. Although the lounge was "kind of" dedicated in the 2000-2001 school year, according to Dave Timmann, director of Sykes Student Union, the $10,000 endowment for the official dedication was finally reached this past semester.
